More Than Just Spring Break On South Padre Island

By Wesley Mathews

For the fishing crowd, South Padre Island with its inexpensive beach rental accommodations along with location on the Texas Gulf Coast fishing grounds has always drawn anglers from all over the world. It's also a prime region for honeymooners and couples seeking South Padre Island romantic vacations. A wide variety of vacation lodging alternatives ranging from South Padre Island cabin rentals to deluxe four-star hotels and upscale condo rentals to private South Padre Island romantic travel inns await your enjoyment whenever you come to visit for fishing or other outdoor adventures - or just to see what this exceptional community has to offer when it comes to arts, culture and general great times.

Like most well-appointed harbor communities, South Padre Island has several charter services with boats operated by experienced anglers who know where to get the large fish. Rates are characteristic of those on the Gulf Coast, averaging about $475 for a half-day outing and $1000 for the full day. The boats are able to accommodate up to eight anglers, and of course bait and tackle are usually furnished (pack your own lunch and beverages, though).

Outdoorsmen who prefer hunting game on dry land won't be disappointed; South Padre Island is home to lots of deer and even game birds that inhabit the island's marshland. Consult with the local State Department of Fish and Game to learn more about permits and hunting areas.

South Padre Island has options for everybody from the family; common pastimes include birdwatching along with photography, bicycling, bungee jumping and of course hiking. The island community also includes a spirited night life offering fine restaurants and a wide variety of entertainment venues.

The island hosts some diverse celebrations throughout the year. During the U.S.A. Surf 'n' Turf Race, amateur athletes compete in a triathlon in swimming, cycling and running. Held annually, the sponsors for this race provide an informational internet site at http://www.unlimitedsportsadventures.com/ .

September kicks off with the Fireworks Over The Bay SPI Beach Volleyball Tournament, which takes place on the South Padre Island Convention & Visitors Bureau and Boomerang Billy's Beach at the Surf Motel during Labor Day Weekend. Mariners who possess and operate that unique sailing vessel referred to as the catamaran can compete in the yearly Ruffrider Regatta during the next weekend. Additional information is offered on the Web at http://www.ruffrider.net/

A month later over Columbus Day Weekend, motorcyclists from all over the united states gather at South Padre Island for the yearly Bike festival, featuring food, local brews and a live concert.

Folks who are more artistically disposed look forward to the International Sand Sculpture Contest. This event is held every year in mid-October, and is open to people of all skill levels from beginner to master. Find out more about it as you view some samples of sand sculpture from past contests by visiting http://www.sandcastledays.com/ .

With November arrives the area's once a year music festival. This happening is reknowned for a diverse line up of musical groups from classical to heavy metal: go to www.spimusicfest.com for further details.
