The great news today is that my bed does not loath me. I'm not sure about the cause of the shoulder pain still, but the problem with my neck is Cricket Ache caused by dropping off in front of the TV whilst watching the Test Match and being incapable to sustain wakefulness. At least I did manage to see the termination of the match. It will not be happening again, I am very much a Test match watcher and will not be bothering to sit up for the limited over matches. Besides, this is a Friday, in subsequent weeks I'll be aiming to get an early start at work so that I can slope off in after lunch to go angling.
What with the present Mrs Izzard returning to work after a prolonged sick leave due to breast cancer treatment since April in a couple of weeks, and the prospect of the weather becoming milder through February and March, the temptation of the canal towpath will probably be overwhelming now that I have chosen to update the fishing tackle and start angling again.
When I was looking through my fishing tackle recently, I came across an old rod licence which was dated 1994, which very likely was the last time I went angling. It seems an awfully long time and yet I recall it clearly, a sunny day in June when I went for a day's angling on the Thames at Walton, and I caught my single ever barbel. This may seem odd, but most of the fishing I did as a youth was on a fishery in Cranleigh where I grew up, and barbel are a river fish.
Then, I didn't have a great deal of fishing tackle as I rarely had very much money and yet I still have the majority of it from then. I find it staggering that even when I started to earn a lot of money, I never really thought about fishing or spending some money and getting some really great fishing tackle and spending more time by the water.
When I do resume, I will need to shell out some change\money, the priority is getting a rod licence and becoming a member of the Birmingham Anglers Association who control fishing on the canals around here, then I'll need some new fishing tackle as mine is old and possibly outlawed now, especially the hooks which all look to have barbs which I'm pretty sure aren't permitted now.
I can't wait to go back, though I'm not embarrassed to say that I was always and assuredly will be now, a very fair weather angler, so I will need dry, warm conditions. It doesn't have to be clear, just not damp and cold and if it is a Friday after my wife has resumed work (and I'm legal) then the likelihood is I am going to go angling. Love it.
